Dana clicked on her Bluetooth and answered. “Detective Blake.”

“Where are you?” Maribel asked.

“In the car.” She reached over to give Taz a pat on the back. After having saved her life, the very least she could do was extend him the courtesy of riding in the front seat.

“Hunter was supposed to check in thirty minutes ago. I haven’t heard from him. When I call, it goes straight to voicemail.”

Alarm bells went off inside Dana’s head. She white-knuckled the steering wheel.

“I’m here at the station,” Maribel went on. “Stephens tracked Chloe’s cell by IMEI, but it’s no longer in transit. Looks like they stopped somewhere near Wardsboro.”

Dana glanced at her GPS. “I’m about twenty minutes from Wardsboro now.”

“You are?” Maribel asked, sounding momentarily surprised. “Of course you are. Where else would you be? Is Taz there with you?”

“Affirmative. He wanted in on the action.”

“I already called the Vermont State Police. They’re on their way. Be careful, Dana. As the best friend who readily filled the shoes of my deceased best friend, you have an obligation to stay alive.”

Dana was honored. They’d never spoken of their friendship status aloud, but the feeling was mutual. “Roger that,” she said. “And ditto.”
